Community Remote Sensing: IRAQ Operational Agricultural Monitoring Project, GEOINT ONLINE

CONTRIBUTION TO FIELD

Community-based processes for augmenting centralized geospatial intelligence capabilities. GEOINT Online (GO) is a website that is unifying existing NGA web-based capabilities for online, on-demand discovery of and access to geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) content, services, expertise, and support.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service utilized ESRI and ResourceSat-1 AWIFS imagery for the successful early warning of the drought in Iraq as a result of a pilot project conducted jointly by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS). The goal of the pilot was to develop new remote sensing processes for assessing crop health and predicting harvest yields in growing regions where minimal information is available regarding actual conditions on the ground. The spatial resolution of the AWiFS imagery enabled the analysts to pinpoint known wheat and grain producing areas in Northern Iraq. Vegetative health indices derived from these images confirmed the biomass growth was well below that of previous years. The large swath of the sensor covered the nation, providing remote sensing researchers the ability to compare and contrast the effects of the drought conditions in farm fields across Iraq.

The accumulation of all this has brought forth the Agricultural Monitoring Interactive Google Map, an online portal provided through the collaboration of NGA and the USDA FAS Office of Global Analysis. Utilizing the features of the Google Maps API, this portal provides users with agricultural products and crop analysis data focused in Iraq.

The success of this project has propelled it to extend into nearby countries. The active countries now involved in this project are:

  • Iraq
  • Syria
  • Iran
  • Afghanistan
  • Pakistan
